Vendor Credentialing in Non-Hospital Sites

In a side bar to an article in the May issue of Repertoire magazine and a blog post, Physician Alignment: Will vendor credentialing find its way into non-hospital sites?, Graham Garrison, managing editor, asks several leaders in the industry if the type of vendor credentialing now common in hospitals will soon be in non-hospital sites.

The answer is essentially, “yes.” Repertoire notes that Intermountain Healthcare already “requires credentialing for reps calling on physician’s offices and surgery centers located in Intermountain hospitals….” Vendormate’s own Bill Hayes, president and COO, concurs and refers to Vendormate’s relationship with Surgical Care Affiliates.

There is a troubling undercurrent to this article that needs to be addressed before vendor credentialing becomes widespread among surgery centers.  All parties need to be cognizant that “vendor credentialing” shouldn’t be code for “access control.”

Vendor credentialing is about ensuring the healthcare providers have relationships with suppliers that can meet their needs.

The onus is on the buyer to make vendor credentialing play out in a meaningful way in this space. That means the buyer side determines in advance — and communicates in advance — the criteria on which supplier relationships are built.  The criteria can certainly include rep characteristics and behaviors, but it also includes the financial and legal status of the supplier, gift & gratuity policies, sample policies, Stark law disclosures, etc. Vendor credentials can and should be about selecting the right partners to deliver on the healthcare provider’s mission.
